The label released Absolute Power in 2002, with Strange artists Krizz Kaliko and Kutt Calhoun making guest appearances on the album along with Eminem's dark crew D12. Touring certainly helped spread the word, and the rapper's over the top stage show locked some fans in for good, but Tech didn't feel his label was being honest about sales, so he left JCOR and took Strange Music with him. The Worst followed on the label in 2000, and then the Interscope-associated imprint JCOR picked the artist up for 2001's Anghellic, a horrorcore effort that introduced Tech's own sublabel, Strange Music. In 1996 he signed with Quincy Jones' label Qwest before moving to the indie Midwestside Records, where he released his debut, The Calm Before the Storm, in 1999. He brought these qualities to his own work as he joined groups like Black Mafia, 57th Street Rogue Dog Villians, Nnutthowze, and the Yukmouth project the Regime. Later, music helped him deal with his mother's ongoing struggle with lupus, while an interest in horror and ghosts would offer an attractively dark form of escapism. As the late 2010s gave way to the 2020s, he followed a prolific release schedule, issuing a full-length each year, including hits such as 2018's Planet, 2019's N9NA, and 2021's ASIN9NE.īorn Aaron Dontez Yates in Kansas City, Missouri, Tech learned to read and do math through educational raps.

Issuing a quartet of Top Five albums in the early 2010s - All 6's and 7's, Something Else, Strangeulation, and Special Effects - he built a vast and devoted audience with little help from the mainstream. When it comes to influence, Tech has arguably topped underground trailblazers Insane Clown Posse thanks to collaborations with mainstream artists and a style that evolved from horrorcore to hardcore and confessional. In the process, he built his Strange Music label into a Psychopathic Records-styled empire with an accompanying loyal fan base. If you need something to keep you going as the days get longer and time drags by, I would definitively recommend indulging in K.O.D, but just remember to stay out of the dark.Even though he debuted in the underground realm of horrorcore and seemed destined to be a future footnote, rapper Tech N9ne grew to become an indie rap superstar. Other standout tracks sure to be singles include “Demons” (feat Three Six Mafia), “Strange Music Box,” “B-Boy,” and “Check Yo Temperature.” My only regret was that Corey Taylor of Slipknot was not included on “Killing You,” but hey, you can’t get everything right? But still, he has yet to get much radio play, if any at all, despite the mainstream attention. The best part is, he writes all his own lyrics, which makes listening for me all the more enjoyable. He is Buster Rhymes esque with his quick delivery, but yet does not loose any substance to what he is saying. My favorite is “Hunterish,” which has, besides the best beat and hook, (You’re one hund-er-ed, we so hunt-er-ish), includes Tech absolutely destroying the beat with his unique flow. The album has 24 tracks, all of which you will listen to again and again. I have had the album for all of three days and already I have all the hooks memorized, and lines like “I’m a sexual predator, better alert the neighbors, cause your desperate housewife is just my flavor” also stick with you thoughout the day. Anyway, Tech N9ne went all out in his 2009 release, throwing Three Six Mafia onto the track “Demons.” How do I best describe his sound? It reminds me a lot of Lil Jon in terms of the heavy, deep choruses that are backed behind deep bass and catchy string patterns, and holy shit does the music stay with you. (which I did not think to be the scene of two highschool suburban girls). I was recently surpised to find that two girls I know had gone to his concert recently, especially when Tech N9ne is with the likes of other horrorcore bands like Insane Clown Posse. With his most recent release of K.O.D, or King Of Darkness, is classified as horrorcore, a infusion of dark lyrics with hip hop.

Tech N9ne is arguably the best non mainstream rapper to finally break through onto the Billboard 200, positioned at number 4 currently on Rap Album sales and peaking at number 14 overall. I just discovered an old blog I used to keep almost four years ago, and decided to post this review I wrote on Tech N9ne.
